After a decade of navigating the vibrant European venture capital landscape, I found myself at a crossroads. The opportunity to pivot from a trajectory as a Partner in one of Europe’s largest growth funds and embrace the growing Greek technology ecosystem at Big Pi Ventures was both thrilling and daunting. However, my decision was influenced by several factors that highlighted the immense potential and changing dynamics within the Greek startup scene.

One of the key factors driving my decision was the undeniable transformation taking place in Greece, particularly within its technology ecosystem. While it may not have the size of London, Paris, Berlin, or Amsterdam, the entrepreneurial successes of Stockholm, or the VC hype of Barcelona and Madrid, Greece is emerging on the global tech scene. It boasts a burgeoning pool of talent, especially in engineering and biology, which presents a unique advantage for investment and innovation. The talent pool in these areas is exceptional not only in quantity but also in quality. Greek engineers and biologists are recognized globally for their innovative approaches and research excellence. Furthermore, the strong Greek diaspora (there are 10 million people living in Greece and around 5 million Greeks abroad) enhances this potential by providing a vast network of connections and resources that can fuel growth and expansion.

Despite the promise shown by the startup ecosystem, it faces its own set of challenges. While ambition levels among entrepreneurs are on the rise, there is still room for improvement. Encouraging early internationalisation and cultivating a culture of bold innovation will be crucial in unlocking the full potential of Greek startups on the global stage. Additionally, addressing the lack of local capital for later-stage funding rounds is essential for sustaining growth and fostering a thriving ecosystem.

Greece remains an overlooked geography for venture capital investors. Its ecosystem is still in its early stages, offering a landscape filled with high-potential startups that have yet to be discovered by the majority of European and US investors. This oversight presents a compelling opportunity to capitalize on untapped potential and insider knowledge, creating the leading investment group in the region. The country is currently experiencing fantastic momentum, and at Big Pi Ventures, we are excited to be at the forefront of this transformative journey, supporting visionary founders in achieving their dreams.
